Political parties are groups of people who share similar ideas about how the government should work and who join together to try to elect leaders who will carry out those ideas.

Some voters support a third party because they do not agree with either of the two big parties and want someone who represents their beliefs. Other voters back a third party to bring new ideas into the conversation and try to change what the main parties talk about.

A strong third party would make the system more democratic by giving voters more choices and representing people whose views are not shown by the two big parties — for example, in 2024 independent candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West ran with different ideas about vaccine safety, economic fairness, and criminal justice, so voters had more options. It would also make major parties listen and respond to more issues because third-party campaigns in 2024 pushed some topics into news stories and debates. This helps democracy because more people feel heard and candidates must work harder to earn votes.
