Mark and his dad had been working on the bot since the sizzling hot days of summer. It had taken a long six months, but their robot was finally ready for battle. Mark and his dad stood back and admired the bright red and turquoise paint job and the single blade that protruded through the top. They thought back to when the dream was just an idea. Then, the plans were drawn, and Rhino was born. The bot was fierce, and they couldn’t wait to see it in action.
Mark named the robot Rhino because of its “horn” on top. The horn was an added surprise to catch the opponent off guard. Mark remembered back to the day when he received the letter saying Rhino was chosen to compete against other bots on television. Mark had never been so excited.
When the day of the tournament arrived, Mark couldn’t stop smiling. He had watched other bots battle in the rink and couldn’t believe that his dream to battle was about to come true. Mark’s dad unloaded the bot, and they strolled into the arena. Eyes gawked at their robot as they hauled it down the hallway. Rhino was set to battle the robot, Black Magic. Rumor had it that Black Magic hadn’t lost a battle all year. Mark’s hands began to sweat as Rhino took center stage.
“Welcome to the rink for the very first time…..Rhiiiiiiinoooo!” the announcer sang into the microphone. The crowd went wild. Mark and his dad stared out from behind the glass wall. They both had butterflies in their stomachs as they noticed how many people had come to watch. Mark grabbed the remote and made Rhino turn around and around. The crowd continued to cheer. Soon, it was time for the battle to begin.
“Begin on three…one, two, threeee!” the announcer said as the two robots zoomed to meet each other. Rhino immediately extended the blade and hammered down on Black Magic. A small piece fell off and bounced around the rink. Black Magic sped at Rhino with revenge in mind. Mark gripped the remote tightly. Mark controlled Rhino to go left and then a sharp right. Rhino took Black Magic by surprise and flipped it over on its back. Black Magic was unable to recover. Game over. Rhino took the win! Mark started jumping up and down. His dad gave him a high five, and they hugged each other. This was a dream come true for Mark! He could see many more battles in his future.
