When the tram reached Clayton’s stop, he stepped off and started down the glassed-in walkway to the “pod” he and his family shared. On either side of him lay the vast surface of the Moon. Normally, he loved to look at it, but today, he missed his home on Earth.
His dad was in the kitchen when Clayton arrived, adding water to freeze-dried peas and carrots. “Hey, sport, supper’s almost ready,” he said.
Ugh, Clayton thought, not freeze-dried vegetables again. “I promised Daren and Liza I’d video chat with them,” Clayton said.
“Okay, but hurry up,” his dad said, “or your food will get cold.”
Up in his room, Clayton set up a three-way call on his computer.
“Hey, Clay,” Daren greeted him, “how’s life on Moonland?”
Liza waved at him from the other half of the screen.
“I miss you guys,” Clayton said. “I wish we could go get pizza and hang out. I can’t believe I have to be here another eight months.”
That night at supper, Clayton had no appetite. When his father asked him what was wrong, he burst out, “I want to go home! Can’t I take the next shuttle and go stay with Aunt Susie?”
“Clayton,” his mother said, “we know you’re lonely, but this might cheer you up.” She handed Clayton a sheet of paper.
“Visitors Week!” the paper announced. “Families may invite two people from Earth to visit, all expenses paid.” Clayton’s eyes widened.
“We thought you could invite Daren and Liza,” his dad said. Suddenly, Clayton felt happier than he had in weeks. A week with his best friends was just the pick-me-up Clayton needed.
