Read the passage and drag the correct words to complete the sentences. As you read, think about which areas of Russia have the most people, which have the least, and why.
The European part of Russia is the most heavily populated. More people live there per square mile than in other parts of the country. These areas have the best climates and soils for farming. Like in Britain and Germany, the largest cities grew where farming was good. Extra food from farmers helped cities grow.
Siberia is very large but has few people. One reason is permafrost, soil that stays frozen all year. This frozen soil makes it hard to build houses, roads, and bridges. The ground can crack or sink when it thaws. Farming is almost impossible, and construction costs are much higher. These challenges make Siberia less suitable for large populations.
