About 2,500–3,000 years ago, the Bantu began migrating throughout Africa. The Bantu originally lived in the area that is now Nigeria. The farming techniques of the Bantu depleted soil nutrients, forcing them to move every few years.

Each time they migrated, the Bantu influenced the culture of the new area in which they settled. Sometimes other groups of people already lived in these areas, and these groups had to figure out ways to get along with the newcomers. Sometimes they did not get along, and wars broke out.

The Bantu exchanged ideas and information with the people they encountered and sometimes intermarried. They combined their cultures to create new customs and traditions. The Bantu also brought their farming techniques and technology to their new communities. They taught their neighbors how to make weapons from copper, bronze, and iron.

By migrating throughout Africa and sharing their culture with other groups, the Bantu greatly influenced the history and culture of Africa.
