The Romanov Dynasty in Russia

In 1613, Russian nobles elected 16-year-old Michael Romanov to be tsar, or ruler, of Russia. This began the Romanov dynasty, which ruled for the next 300 years. During Michael’s rule, Russia increased contact with Western Europe, and explorers traveled across Siberia all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Peter the Great ruled from the late 1600s to 1725. He wanted to make Russia as powerful as the countries of Europe. Peter westernized Russia by bringing in European ideas, technology, and culture. He built a new capital city, St. Petersburg, near Europe so Russia could trade and learn from western nations.

Catherine the Great ruled from 1762 to 1796. Catherine was not born a Romanov, but she married Peter III, a Romanov. Peter III was unpopular and had little support from the army and nobles. Catherine used her supporters to force Peter to give up the throne and became the ruler of Russia. She expanded Russia’s land to include the Black Sea coast, much of Ukraine, and parts of Poland. Under the Romanovs, Russia became one of Europe’s great powers.
