Wilma Rudolph: Champion Runner
1 When she was a child, Wilma Rudolph contracted both polio and scarlet fever, two serious illnesses. Doctors told Wilma's mother that she was unlikely to walk again, but Wilma and her mother refused to believe this news. Wilma worked hard to get stronger, enduring long hours of tedious physical therapy. Not only did Wilma walk again, but she also became one of the greatest athletes of all time! In high school, Wilma played many sports, but it was as a sprinter on the track team that she truly excelled. She blew by her high school competitors. She was so good that she was invited to train with a local college team while she was still a high school student.
2 In 1956, Wilma won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, when she was only sixteen. But ambitious Wilma was not finished. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy, she won three gold medals. She was the first American female runner to win so many medals at a single Olympic Games. She also broke one world record and tied another. She became known as the fastest woman in the world. Although Wilma's records have been broken over time, no one will ever forget this champion athlete.
