1 When she was a child, Wilma Rudolph contracted both polio and scarlet fever, two serious illnesses. 2 In 1956, Wilma won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, when she was only sixteen. But ambitious Wilma was not finished. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy, she won three gold medals. She was the first American female runner to win so many medals at a single Olympic Games. She also broke one world record and tied another. She became known as the fastest woman in the world. Although Wilma's records have been broken over time, no one will ever forget this champion athlete.
