Dusk
by H.H. Munro (Saki)
On the bench by his side sat an elderlygentleman with a drooping air of defiance thatwas probably the remaining vestige of self-respect in an individual who had ceased to defysuccessfully anybody or anything. His clothescould scarcely be called shabby, at least theypassed muster in the half-light, but one’simagination could not have pictured the wearerembarking on the purchase of a half-crown boxof chocolates or laying out ninepence on acarnation buttonhole. He belongedunmistakably to that forlorn orchestra to whosepiping no one dances; he was one of theworld’s lamenters who induce no responsiveweeping. As he rose to go Gortsby imaginedhim returning to a home circle where he wassnubbed and of no account, or to some bleaklodging where his ability to pay a weekly billwas the beginning and end of the interest heinspired. His retreating figure vanished slowlyinto the shadows, and his place on the benchwas taken almost immediately by a young man, fairly well dressed but scarcely more cheerful ofmien than his predecessor. As if to emphasisethe fact that the world went badly with him thenewcomer unburdened himself of an angry andvery audible expletive as he flung himself intothe seat.
“You don’t seem in a very good temper,” saidGortsby, judging that he was expected to takedue notice of the demonstration.

Correct answers (three):

- Gortsby believes that the absence of a bar of soap means that the young man’s story is untrue.
- Gortsby interprets the man’s actions as a performance intended to create sympathy.
- The young man reaches into his pockets in search of the soap.

Reason: Each of these events shows a difference between appearance and actual motive or fact — how Gortsby perceives the young man’s behavior versus what may really be happening.
