Find a number whose square root is 24 more than 5 times the number.

How do I set up this problem?

1 answer

let the number be x

√x = 5x+24
square both sides
x = 25x^2 + 240x + 576
25x^2 + 239 + 576 = 0

If you use the formula on this quadratic you will see that it has no real solution.
