1. Before plugging the toaster into an outlet, be sure the bread carriage lever is in the UP position.

2. Place the toaster in a safe place, at least 3 inches away from a wall, curtains, or other flammable materials.

3. Plug the toaster cord into a grounded 3-prong electrical outlet. A tone will sound when the toaster is connected. Excess cord may be wrapped around the brackets on the base of the toaster.

4. Allow the first toasting process to take place while empty. This will heat the new elements and burn off any dust that may have accumulated during storage.

5. Turn the shade dial to the desired level of darkness. Rotate the dial clockwise for darker toast and counterclockwise for lighter toast. Shade settings are as follows: LIGHT settings are 1–3, MEDIUM settings are 4–6, and DARK settings are 7–9.

6. Push down on the bread carriage lever and turn the On/Off switch to the ON position. It will spring back automatically. A red function light will then illuminate, indicating the toasting cycle has begun.

7. When the toasting cycle is completed, a tone will sound and the function light will turn yellow. The toast will remain in the toaster where it is kept warm until the bread carriage lever is raised manually.
