I think the playwright did not put Rebecca’s father and Sojourner Truth on stage so the play could stay focused on the people who are there. Even though they do not appear, we still feel how important they are from what other characters say. Leaving them out makes them seem bigger, almost like ideas instead of regular people. It also keeps the play simple and lets us imagine them in our heads.
