Camels
(1) People that live in places like the Sahara Desert use camels when they want to move from place to place. (2) That's because camels have bodies that are adapted for this climate. (3) They can live a long time without water and food. (4) They can protect themselves from sandstorms. (5) They can survive in both hot and cold temperatures.

(6) Camels can survive without water and food much longer than other animals. (7) They can go without water for one week and without food for up to two months. (8) They have special types of blood cells that let there bodies go so long without water. (9) Most animals have blood cells that are round in shape but camels have blood cells that are oval. (10) Scientists believe this helps camels store water in their bodies. (11) Camels store food in the humps on their backs as fat. (12) They use this stored energy in which they do not have any food.

(13) The camel's body is suited in other ways at desert living. (14) Deserts often have sandstorms. (15) Camels can take care of themselves in these storms. (16) They have bushy eyebrows and long double eyelashes. (17) Both help keep the sand out of their eyes. (18) They can also close their noses so that sand won't blow inside.

(19) Camels live in both hot and cold deserts. (20) One type of camel lives in china's Gobi Desert. (21) This desert is boiling hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. (22) The Gobi Desert camel grows a long, shaggy coat in the winter to keep it warm. (23) Then, in the summer, it sheds the coat so it may stay cool.

(24) The camels' adaptations let them survive in the desert. (25) They are able to live and travel. (26) In places that many other animals cannot. (27) For thousands of years, camels have been helping people who live in the desert. (28) It is likely they help people for many years to come.
