They also shaped important responses — including non‑proliferation treaties, humanitarian law debates, and movements for nuclear disarmament — because the world was forced to confront the moral and strategic consequences of nuclear weapons. Japan’s postwar pacifism and its close alliance with the United States were direct political consequences, while the attacks left lasting ethical questions about targeting civilians in war.
