A Surprising Story
Matthew Ramirez
Elli was very excited on her first day of journalism class. She wanted to be a journalist for as long as she could remember. Elli was eager to begin the class, and she already knew what topic she wanted to write about for her first article: the school's upcoming basketball game. Reporting on the game would give her a chance to show her teacher her writing and reporting skills.
During her first journalism class, Elli sat in the front row. A tall woman with brown hair walked through the door and set down some papers.
"I am your teacher, Ms. Miller, and I hope you're just as excited about this class as I am!" the woman said. "Who's ready to write some news?" Ms. Miller shouted.
Elli eagerly raised her hand. When she noticed she was the only person who had raised, she quickly dropped it on her desk. Her face turned a little pink, and she felt her cheeks become hot.
"I will assign each of you a topic to write about for your first article. You must turn in your articles by the end of the week," Ms. Miller said.
Ms. Miller passed out copies of a few famous news articles. She then taught the class what a good reporter should do when writing the news. Elli was very interested. She took many notes. At the end of class, Ms. Miller started to announce the topics for the students' articles. Elli's heart raced.
"Devon Greene will be covering the big basketball game," said Ms. Miller.
Elli frowned. She had wanted to write about the game.
"Elli Miller will cover the science club's new garden," Ms. Miller continued. "Elli, you will talk to the science club president."
Ms. Miller moved to the other side of the room to organize some papers.
Elli held back the tears. She could not think of anything more boring than writing about how plants grow. How could she show off her reporting skills when she knew nothing about plants?
She trudged to the science club's office at the end of the day. She was not happy about her assignment. When she arrived, she met the club's president, Jason. He was excited to show Elli the garden.
Jason took her to the field near the school where the club members planted the garden. Elli was amazed by what she saw in front of her. Beautiful plants with large, color flowers dotted the garden. As she and Jason walked through the garden, she asked him questions and wrote down his answers. She gathered so much information about the garden that she could barely fit it all into her article. Elli even skipped the basketball game so she could finish her article about the garden.
In the end, her hard work paid off, and Ms. Miller gave her an A on her assignment. Elli was pleasantly surprised by the entire experience. After that day, Elli always accepted her assignments looking forward to the new things she could experience and learn.
