A restaurant chef needs 8 1/2 pound of salmon. To get a good price, he buys more than he needs. He ends up with 4 7/8 pounds too much. How much salmon did he buy?

x - 9/12 + 2/12 = 17/12
x - 7/12 = 17/12
x = 17/12 + 7/12
x = 24/12
x = 2
x - 3/4 + 1/6 = 17/12
x - 9/12 + 2/12 = 17/12
x - 7/12 = 17/12
x = 17/12 + 7/12
x = 24/12
x = 2
