Surface runoff is the main transport pathway that carries sediment, nutrients, pesticides, metals, oil, and pathogens from land into rivers, lakes and coastal waters, so reducing runoff prevents those pollutants from leaving their source in the first place. By slowing, infiltrating, or retaining stormwater (through green infrastructure, buffers, permeable surfaces, etc.) you cut the volume and peak flows that cause erosion, dilute and disperse contaminants, and trigger sewer overflows. Because it addresses the diverse, widespread problem of diffuse (nonpoint) pollution rather than treating individual contaminants downstream, controlling runoff is the most general and effective way to reduce overall water pollution.
