A router is like a traffic director at a busy intersection: it sits between your internet connection and the devices in your home and decides which lane each packet of data should take. Just as a traffic cop uses signs and signals to prevent crashes, the router uses IP addresses and routing rules to send each bit of information to the right device. It also hands out temporary parking permits (DHCP addresses) so new devices can join easily and often runs a security guard (firewall) to keep unauthorized traffic out.
