Question
Read the passages and complete the sentences below. As you read, think about why a European country might decide to join the European Union (EU) and why a country might decide not to join.
The European Union (EU)
The European Union (EU) is a group of countries in Europe that work together for peace and trade. The EU started as a way for western European countries to improve their economies and make trade easier through a single market. The European Union has its own government, but its powers are limited. Member countries agree to follow rules so that trade is fair and businesses compete equally.
Challenges for Joining
Not all countries in Europe are part of the EU. Some do not meet the requirements, and others choose not to join because they want to keep control over their own decisions. Joining the EU can also cause financial challenges. For example, when poorer countries like Romania and Slovakia joined, Portugal received less financial help because the EU had to share its funds.
