Parliament makes the laws and has two parts: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The leader of the majority party in the House of Commons becomes prime minister and runs the government.
Government in Germany: Parliamentary Democracy with a President
Germany is a country in Europe with a parliamentary democracy. The Bundestag is the main part of parliament. Its members are elected by the people and make laws. The chancellor is chosen by the Bundestag and runs the government and makes decisions. The president is the head of state. The president represents the country but does not make laws or run the government. The president is elected by a special group made up of members of parliament and state representatives. Germany also has the Bundesrat, which represents the state governments.
