- For a graph: use the vertical line test — if any vertical line intersects the graph more than once, the relation is NOT a function. If every vertical line intersects at most once, it IS a function.
- For a mapping diagram: each element of the domain must have exactly one arrow leaving it. If any domain element has 0 or >1 arrows, it's not a function.
- For an ordered-pair list: no x-value (first coordinate) may appear in more than one pair with different y-values. Example: {(1,2),(1,3)} is not a function; {(1,2),(2,2)} is a function.
