He hopes for the crown — to be made Duncan’s successor/king. When Duncan names Malcolm “Prince of Cumberland,” Macbeth sees it as an obstacle to that hoped-for reward (“The Prince of Cumberland! that is a step / On which I must fall down, or else o’erleap”) and immediately conceals his “black and deep desires.”
