They suffered broken treaties, violence, and loss of food, culture, and autonomy. Many must have felt betrayed, grieving, and desperate for justice or safety. Chief Joseph’s speech shows sorrow, moral clarity, and a plea for fair treatment. I would have agreed with Chief Joseph because his call for humane treatment and honesty matched the realities we faced. Backing his plea for peace and rights would have been both dignified and practical.
