Ecosystems can change in many ways, both through natural processes and human activities: succession gradually alters species composition after disturbances; sudden events like fires, storms, floods or droughts can rapidly shift community structure; invasive species can outcompete natives and rewrite food webs; climate change changes temperature and precipitation patterns, shifting habitats and phenologies; pollution and nutrient loading (eutrophication) can reduce water quality and cause algal blooms; habitat fragmentation and land-use change shrink and isolate populations, increasing extinction risk; and disease outbreaks or large fluctuations in keystone species can cascade through trophic levels. These changes affect biodiversity, productivity, nutrient cycling and the ecosystem services people rely on, and they often interact so that one change amplifies others.
