Government policies can help fix environmental injustices, but they only work if the rules are clear and people who break them are held responsible. To make sure policies are enforced fairly, officials should include local communities in decisions, share pollution and enforcement data, and give people easy ways to report problems. For example, the Maryland Environmental Literacy Partnership teaches students and neighborhoods about local pollution so they can speak up and push officials to enforce laws where they’re needed most. When everyone can see the data, take part in choices, and get equal protection, environmental policies are more likely to be fair.
