Shark Sighting
1. “Shark!” Adrian yelled as he paddled on his surfboard toward shore.
2. As he pushed through the water, he passed his best friend, Fatima. She straddled her board.
3. Adrian was out of breath as he paddled hard to get to shore as quickly as possible.
4. “What are you doing?” Fatima called after Adrian.
5. “Get out of the water! There’s a shark!” Adrian yelled. He’d seen the fin. A shark was in the water with them today, and if he didn’t get to shore fast, he’d be shark bait.
6. Fatima followed closely behind as he dragged his board behind him and ran to the shore.
7. “Dude, what’s wrong?” Fatima said, standing next to Adrian on the beach.
8. “I saw a shark,” Adrian said.
9. “Where?” Fatima asked.
10. “Out there,” Adrian said, still breathing heavily. “I swear. I saw the fin.”
11. Fatima giggled. “That wasn’t a shark.”
12. “Huh?” Adrian said.
13. “You’re not used to our beach. There are a ton of dolphins out there. Never sharks.”
14. “But I know what I saw.”
15. “And you saw a dolphin. Stop being a baby.”16. Adrian bit his bottom lip. Was he being a baby? But he knew what he saw. Sure, dolphin and shark fins could look similar, but dolphins swam in a hill and valley pattern, while sharks swam straight and quickly.
17. “There’s never been a shark in our waters,” Fatima said.
18. “There’s always a first,” Adrian said, shrugging. However, Fatima knew these waters better than him. Adrian was visiting from Australia, where he saw sharks all the time.
19. “Stop this, and let’s surf,” Fatima said, patting her friend on his back. “No need to worry.”
20. Adrian knew what he saw. Yet, he didn’t want to disappoint his friend. And he definitely didn’t want Fatima to think he was a being a baby.
21. Adrian cautiously followed Fatima back into the water. The waves were about two to three feet with a gentle east wind, and the water was crystal blue. It was the perfect beach day.
22. Adrian straddled his board.
23. Next to him, Fatima paddled.
24. “Have you seen the dolphins today?” Adrian asked.
25. “Not yet,” Fatima said. “They’ll come around.”
26. Didn’t Fatima think that not seeing dolphins was strange? A chill ran up Adrian’s back.
27. Then again, Fatima was more familiar with the water here. He needed to stop overthinking.
28. Suddenly, Fatima screamed.
29. When Adrian looked, Fatima was on all fours on her board. “Shark!” she said, pointing at the fin.
30. Adrian wished he wasn’t right, but there it was—a shark.
31. Adrian heard his heartbeat as he watched the shark emerge and return underwater. He saw this as a chance to flee. While paddling as hard as he could, he grabbed Fatima’s board and pulled her with him. “Hold on,” he said.
32. Once they got on shore, Fatima fell onto the sand. “I’m sorry,” she said. “You were right.”
33. This was the one time Adrian wished he wasn’t.
