Pierogi are classic East European dumplings that are most commonly known as a Polish dish. They are most frequently found in semi-circle shapes and filled with stuffings like meat, cheese, and potato.

The History of Pierogi

Pierogi are believed to have originated in the thirteenth century. The Romanians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, and Slovaks have also all staked a claim to pierogi. However, the first appearance of the term “pierogi” is found in Polish cookbooks from the seventeenth century.


Throughout the seventeenth century the dish rose to popularity. Pierogi were adapted for every holiday and celebration. Making pierogi has now become a rich tradition in Poland and around Europe.


Making Pierogi

Pierogi consist of dough and a filling inside. The dough is traditionally made with flour and warm water. Other recipes may add egg and various spices. Once the dough forms, it is rolled out and cut into squares or circles to receive the filling.


The filling itself can vary widely. Fillings range from mashed potatoes or fried onions to cabbage, vegetables, and meat. There are even dessert pierogi fillings. Once the filling has been added, the pierogi dough is folded over and sealed at the seams to form a half circle. The next step is to boil the pierogi. It will float once fully cooked.


Pierogi Around the World

Pierogi can be found in the frozen food section of many grocery stores today. Their popularity has spread to Canada and the United States thanks to European immigrants over the last few hundred years.
