Primarily with Darry — Ponyboy and his oldest brother clash a lot. Darry is strict, pushes Ponyboy to do better, and even slaps him early in the book; Ponyboy feels Darry is too hard and thinks he doesn't love him. They argue until later events (Johnny’s injury, the church fire) force Ponyboy to see Darry’s love and they reconcile.

He also has conflicts with the Socs (especially Bob and Randy) and some internal conflict about his identity as a Greaser, but the main personal conflict in the story is with Darry.
