My first day of school this year began with a mix of excitement and nerves as I woke up early, zipped my new backpack, and practiced my schedule one more time in the mirror. When I arrived, the hallways buzzed with students catching up after summer; I felt small among groups but greeted a few familiar faces and a couple of new classmates. In homeroom we met our teachers, who introduced themselves and handed out syllabi and colorful planners, and I tried hard to listen while my mind fluttered between curiosity and worry about new routines. During the middle of the day I moved from class to class, learned where the library and cafeteria were, and sat through a math lesson that was harder than I expected; at lunch I sat with a student who invited me to join their table, and we traded stories about our summers. I also got briefly lost on the way to science, but a friendly teacher pointed me in the right direction, which made me feel relieved and more confident. By afternoon, the routine felt more familiar: the bell reminders, the rhythm of classes, and the small victories of finding my locker and remembering my locker combination. The day ended with a walk home while I reviewed the new homework in my head and realized I had survived the first day; I felt tired but proud, excited for the rest of the year and a little more sure of myself than I had been that morning.
