Global warming is expected to produce wide-ranging effects: first, rising sea levels from melting ice and thermal expansion will flood coastal areas and displace millions; second, the atmosphere’s extra heat and moisture will increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather—stronger storms, more intense rainfall and flooding, and longer, deadlier heatwaves; third, ecosystems and biodiversity will be disrupted as species shift ranges, face habitat loss and extinction (for example coral bleaching and collapsing fisheries), undermining ecosystem services; and fourth, human systems will suffer through reduced agricultural yields and food security in many regions, greater water scarcity, and increased health burdens from heat stress and expanding vector-borne diseases.
