Different types of interactions—such as close person-to-person contact, touching contaminated surfaces, contact with infected animals, and exposure to contaminated food, water, or air—allow pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi) to move from one host or environment to another and infect people. Once pathogens enter the body they can multiply and trigger immune responses that cause the symptoms of illness, with risk increasing the more frequent, prolonged, or intimate the contact is and the weaker a person’s immunity or the fewer preventive measures (like vaccination, handwashing, and sanitation) are in place.
