Queen Hatshepsut became a powerful leader partly because she made sure everyone believed she had the right to rule. On her monuments she used the king’s name Maatkare and even had statues that showed her with a false beard and male clothes, which was how pharaohs were usually shown. The writings on temple walls also say the god Amun was her father, so people could see her rule as divinely approved. Those kinds of pictures and inscriptions helped Egyptians accept her as pharaoh.

Another reason she became powerful was that she improved Egypt’s economy and built big public works that impressed people. She organized a famous trading expedition to Punt that brought back gold, incense, and exotic goods, and the reliefs at her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri show these ships and gifts. She also raised obelisks and rebuilt temples, which made priests and nobles support her rule and made Egypt richer. These projects gave her money, allies, and a strong reputation as a good ruler.
