Thomas Jefferson did a lot of good stuff for America and he was super smart. He wrote the Declaration of Independence, which helped start the idea that everyone has rights, and he was a big supporter of science, education, and religious freedom. He also helped double the size of the country with the Louisiana Purchase and tried to make government smaller and simpler. People still admire his ideas about liberty and reason.

At the same time, Jefferson had big problems that make him controversial. He owned many slaves all his life and even had children with Sally Hemings, which shows he didn't live up to his words about equality. He also pushed policies that hurt Native Americans and sometimes acted hypocritically by saying people are equal while keeping slavery. Some of his economic choices like the Embargo Act also hurt ordinary people and made him unpopular.

I think it's complicated, but the bad things weigh heavier. Jefferson's ideas helped make America and inspired freedom, but slavery and his treatment of people are huge faults that can't be ignored. So even though he did great things, the negative parts make him too controversial.
