Because the colonists were fearful of a very powerful government, the Articles of Confederation created a fairly weak national government. There was no executive branch, meaning there was no President. And there was no judicial branch to settle national legal disputes. Congress was not able to create or collect taxes, meaning the country had little money to spend. Congress was able to pass laws to govern the country, but even that was hard to do. In 1789, a new government was created, giving us the Constitution we use to this very day.
