Earthquakes produce intense ground shaking that directly collapses buildings, bridges and roads and also trigger secondary hazards like fires, landslides and liquefaction that increase deaths and damage. Unlike tsunamis, which mainly hit coastal areas, earthquakes can devastate wide inland regions, disrupt utilities and transportation, and produce damaging aftershocks that prolong and expand destruction.
