In English class I learned to read literary texts more closely and deliberately: paying attention to diction, imagery, tone, structure, point of view and other devices to uncover how meaning is made, not just what happens in the plot. I practiced annotating and revisiting passages so I could support interpretations with specific textual evidence and explain how form and language shape theme and effect. I also learned to situate texts in historical and cultural contexts and to notice intertextual connections, which broadened my understanding of authors’ choices and readers’ responses. Through class discussions and written analysis I learned to weigh multiple interpretations, construct clear, evidence-based arguments, and respond to alternate views with respect. Overall, studying literature sharpened my critical thinking, expanded my empathy by exposing me to different perspectives, and improved my ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
