Tenochtitlan was taken over by the Spanish conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés (with large contingents of indigenous allies such as the Tlaxcalans). After a long siege, the city fell in 1521; it was then rebuilt as Mexico City and became the capital of colonial New Spain.
