What are alternate angles?

When a line L cuts across two parallel lines at an angle, alternate angles are two angles, one on each side of line L, but lie between (inside of) the two parallel lines.
The same applies when the two angles both lie outside of the two parallel lines, but remain one on each side of line L.
The same applies when the two angles both lie outside of the two parallel lines, but remain one on each side of line L.
