42=18-4v
It's the same as
18 - 4v = 42
Subtract 18 from both sides.
-4v = 24
Divide both sides by -4
v = -6
42=18-4v
I do not understand this AT ALL. If y'all could explain how to do this to me, that would be EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you!

I assume the instructions were to "solve"
The quest is to isolate the variable on one side of the equation
and have everything else on the other side, so ....
42=18-4v
let's add 4v to both sides
42 + 4v = 18 - 4v + 4v , resulting in the -4v+4v to cancel out
42 + 4v = 18
don't like that 42 on the left side, so
subtract 42 from both sides
42 + 4v - 42 = 18 - 42 , the 42-42 on the left cancels out
4v = - 24
I don't like the 4 in front of the 4v, would prefer to have just "v"
The 4 is "connected" to 4v by multiplication, so let's divide both sides by 4
4v/4 = -24/4
to get: v = -6

Thank you so much!
