When the Declaration of Independence was published and sent to the British king, the colonies had been ruled by the British for almost 200 years. The colonists were tired of and angry with British rule and wanted to be an independent nation. They wanted to govern themselves.
By telling the British king and Parliament to get out of our country, the colonists announced to the world that we were now ready to take our place as adults in the world. The Declaration of Independence set a precedent for the world to emulate.
In addition, the Declaration asserts that all men are created equal -- a radical new idea in the 18th century. It further asserted that if the government doesn't treat people fairly, they have the right to kick the government out.
why is the declaration of independence an important document in american history????
