Throughout her career O’Keeffe painted a wide range of subjects, including close-up flowers, desert landscapes and mountains (especially of New Mexico), animal bones and skulls, and urban scenes and skyscrapers, as well as more abstract charcoal and watercolor studies. Even though her subjects changed, her work consistently emphasized simplified, enlarged forms, strong composition and clear, bold color that distilled each subject to its essential shapes and design.
