Ivan Pavlov was a Russian physiologist best known for discovering classical conditioning (conditioned reflexes). In his famous experiments with dogs he showed that a neutral stimulus (like a bell) paired repeatedly with an unconditioned stimulus (food) came to elicit the same response (salivation) by itself. His work laid the foundation for behaviorism and greatly influenced psychology and learning theory. He also won the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his studies of the digestive system.
