Copernicus made a sun-centered model by reworking old observations and using math to put the sun in the middle with planets moving in circles. His idea explained weird motions like retrograde movement more simply than the old Earth-centered (Ptolemy) model. Most people didn't accept it right away because it went against church beliefs and common sense, and it didn't have better proof until later astronomers like Kepler and Galileo showed more evidence.
