Tribunes of the Plebs (Latin: tribuni plebis) — a college of ten plebeian magistrates elected by the Plebeian Council. Created after the early Republic’s Conflict of the Orders to protect plebeian interests, they could convene the Plebeian Council, propose laws, and exercise the powerful veto (intercessio) against actions of magistrates or the Senate. Their persons were legally sacrosanct, giving them strong protection while carrying out their duties.
