Rational numbers are like a big family that includes whole numbers as some of its members. Whole numbers are the numbers we count with, like 0, 1, 2, 3, and so on—no fractions or decimals here! But rational numbers can also be fractions and decimals that can be turned into fractions, like 1/2 or 0.75. Not all rational numbers are whole numbers because numbers like 1/2 and 3.5 are not whole numbers. However, all whole numbers are rational numbers because you can write them as fractions too, like 2 can be written as 2/1. So, while whole numbers are a part of the rational number family, they aren’t all the same!
