Step 1: Find a Solution

Here’s where you get creative. You get to figure out how you’d solve the problem you chose in Activity 1, using any kind of technology you can imagine. Your solution could take the form of a new device, app, software program, technology service, or class—there are so many options. For example, let’s revisit the possible problems we listed in Activity 1, and think about some technology solutions that could solve those problems.

If we couldn’t get the toast out of the toaster and was scared to use a knife to grab it, we could create a toaster that automatically shuts electricity off if it notices that the toast did not “pop out” like it should.
If we wanted to be able to help my mom find babysitters faster, we could develop an app that links parents and babysitters in real-time
If we learned that too many children in my community don’t have access to healthy food, we could write code that automatically searches out available ride-share cars (drivers waiting for a “ping!”) in the area and triggers them to pick up nutritious food from the grocery store and deliver it to community drop-sites. The code would also reward drivers for dropping off food at the drop-site, perhaps by increasing a piece of their driver score on their ride-share app.
The solution you choose will be based on the problem you are solving. The only requirement is that your solution be related to the technology field and should fit squarely within one of the information technology segments we discussed (hardware and equipment, software and services, semiconductors, personal technology, business technology, or entertainment).

By way of example, our toaster solution would be in the hardware category, the babysitter app is software, and the ride-share code might be considered business technology. If your business falls into more than one segment, that’s fine.

Do note that you will NOT be required to actually execute this plan. In other words, you will not be asked to actually create a new toaster, develop an actual app, or write code for the ride-share scenario. Instead, throughout the course, you’ll consider the problem you’re solving and your specific tech solution as you face various business/career choices.

Write your solution in a word-processing document.

Step 2: Name Your Business
Now, let’s choose a company name. You’ll want it to be interesting and memorable, specific enough so that people know what services you offer, but also not so narrow that you can’t later expand your services. It should also be easy to spell. That’s a tall order, isn’t it? Don’t worry—choose something you like now; you can always change it later if you have to.

Add your business name to your word-processing document.

Step 3: Create a Flyer
Let’s get the word out! Using a free graphic-design tool like Canva, create a one-page flyer for prospective customers that clearly communicates:

The problem your company solves and how
What services it offers
Any relevant pricing

Step 1: Find a Solution

Problem Identified: Lack of Access to Healthy Food for Children in the Community

Solution: NutriConnect - A Community Food Delivery App

NutriConnect will be an innovative mobile application designed to address the issue of food insecurity among children in our community. The app will connect local grocery stores and food banks with volunteers and ride-share drivers to deliver healthy food directly to families in need.

How It Works:

  • User Registration: Parents can create profiles indicating their location and food preferences (e.g., fruits, vegetables, whole grains).
  • Food Inventory: Local grocery stores and food banks can input available healthy food items into the app.
  • Real-Time Alerts: When a food item becomes available, the app sends notifications to registered families.
  • Volunteers & Drivers: Local volunteers and ride-share drivers can sign up to receive notifications for available food drop-offs in their area.
  • Incentives for Drivers: Drivers can earn points towards their driver score or receive small bonuses for successfully delivering healthy food to specified drop-off points.
  • Community Drop-Sites: Designated drop-off points in neighborhoods make it easy for families to pick up food.

Impact: By utilizing existing ride-share infrastructure, NutriConnect will ensure children and families in the community have consistent access to nutritious food, helping to combat food insecurity and promote better health outcomes.
