Summary of "The Epic of Gilgamesh"
Summary of "The Epic of Gilgamesh"

"The Epic of Gilgamesh" is an amazing ancient epic poem about friendship, loss, and the search for immortality. It is considered one of the earliest major pieces of world literature, dating from the third millennium BCE. The epic provides a historical glimpse into ancient Mesopotamian culture, revealing aspects of its politics, religion, view of the afterlife, moral codes, and human nature.

1 Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk, a city in what is now Iraq. Even though he was two-thirds god and one-third human, Gilgamesh was not the best king at first. He was bossy and did whatever he wanted, which upset his people. Seeing the people unhappy, the gods created a friend for Gilgamesh named Enkidu. Enkidu was wild and lived with animals until he met a woman who taught him about human ways. When Gilgamesh found out about this strong, wild man, he wanted to meet him. They had a big fight, but they ended up becoming best friends.

2 Gilgamesh and Enkidu went on many adventures together. During one adventure, they chopped down a big sacred forest and, in doing so, upset the gods. As punishment, the gods mad Enkidu really sick, and he died. This was a huge shock to Gilgamesh. His best friend was gone forever, and for the first time, he was really scared of dying, too.

3 So, Gilgamesh set off on his most important adventure: to find a way to live forever. He traveled far a wide, finally meeting Utnapishtim, a man who had survived a great flood and been granted immortality by the gods. Utnapishtim told Gilgamesh about a magical plant that could make him young again.

4 Gilgamesh finally found the plant, but while he was sleeping, a sneaky snake came and ate it. With that, Gilgamesh's chance for immortality was gone. He returned to Uruk and finally realized that even though he couldn't live forever, he could still be a great king and be remembered for the good things he did and the city he helped build.
