The diaphragm is located underneath the lungs. It is a dome-shaped muscle that separates the thoracic cavity (which contains the lungs and heart) from the abdominal cavity. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity and allowing the lungs to expand as air is drawn in. So, in terms of anatomical position, the diaphragm is positioned below (or inferior to) the lungs.
