Making a Flipbook
History of Flipbooks
You might be wondering what a flipbook is? Flipbooks are books with many pictures. When you turn the pages of the book quickly, the pictures seem to move! The Cracker Jack Co. made flipbooks popular in the early 1900s. They used to put flipbooks inside their popcorn boxes as prizes. Companies that made breakfast cereal, bubble gum, and snack foods also used flipbooks this way.
Make Your Own Flipbook

Flipbook Drawing Ideas

How to Draw a Flipbook
1. Your book should have about thirty pages. A pad of sticky notes works well. If you do not have a pad of paper, you can make your own. Stack about thirty pieces of paper or index cards on top of each other. Tape or staple the stack along the left side.
2. Think about the picture that you want to draw. Do you have any ideas in mind? Your picture needs to change a little on each page. The changes should make the pictures look like they are moving. Very small differences in each picture will make the movement seem slow. Bigger differences in each picture will make the movement seem fast.
3. Turn to the last page of the book. Draw your first picture on this page. Where on the page should you draw your pictures? Draw them close to the right margin of the page, so you will be able to see them as you flip through the book.
4. Turn to the second-to-last page of the book so that it lies on top of the first picture you drew. Trace the first picture you drew, but make the new picture a little bit different.
5. Keep working your way through the book, drawing a new picture on each page so that it shows the action you want. Remember to make each new picture a little different so the pictures seem to move.
6. Once each page of the book has a picture, you can watch the pictures move. Flip the pages quickly from the back of the book to the front. Enjoy your animation!
