His palms were sweaty, and his heart was beating like a drum. He slowly walked up to the edge of the platform attached to the Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge. He dared to peek at the river below. Through only one eye, he slowly glanced below and saw the rushing water of the Arkansas River nearly 1,000 feet below. His legs shook like leaves on a tree. His eyes grew wide with fear and anticipation. This was the day that Luke had waited many months for. He was finally going to bungee jump! But, as he looked down at what lay below, he wasn’t sure he could do it.
“You got this!” he heard Braxton yell from behind him on the bridge. Braxton was Luke’s best friend and had tagged along to encourage Luke to follow through with the jump.
“I’m not so sure,” Luke hollered back, his voice trembling.
Luke had been adventurous from the time he was born. Nothing was off limits. He would build tall towers of pillows and then race to plunge right in the middle of them. He would leap from one piece of furniture to the next. He loved the feeling he got when he accomplished something that others feared. But, standing on that platform, looking down, he felt small and unsure of himself. The instructor interrupted his thoughts.
“Jump on three,” the instructor said. Then, they all counted together.
“One, two, threeee!” Luke stepped with his right foot and his entire body followed behind. He soared down towards the rushing river. His arms were stretched out like an eagle, and his mouth was wide open. Braxton heard him scream as he ventured through the gorge. Within seconds, Luke was flying back up towards the platform and then back down again. His screams turned into a big smile. His hair was a mess as he slowed to a stop. The instructor helped him back on the platform.
“That was amazing!” Luke announced as he finally caught his breath. “I can’t believe I did that.”
“You are so brave. I don’t think I will ever be able to do that,” Braxton laughed.
“You can do whatever you put your mind to. Next time, you are going with me,” Luke said in a matter-of-fact manner. Braxton shook his head, and both boys laughed as they crossed the narrow Royal Gorge Bridge back to the car.

The best response is **A**: by emphasizing Luke’s need for adventure.
The author portrays Luke as someone who is adventurous and eager to take risks, reflecting his excitement and determination to bungee jump despite his fear. In contrast, Braxton seems more cautious and unsure about taking the leap, highlighting the difference in their attitudes toward adventure.
