Best Friends Forever?

CHARACTERS:
MARISSA, 11
JENNA, 11
SAMANTHA, 11
KATE, 11

Setting: School lunch yard. (JENNA joins MARISSA and SAMANTHA at a table.)

MARISSA: I just can’t believe she didn’t invite us!

SAMANTHA: Seriously! We’ve been friends since kindergarten!

JENNA: Who? What are you guys talking about?

MARISSA: (looking around and keeping her voice low) Well, I heard that Kate had a party over the weekend, and she didn’t invite us!

SAMANTHA: Can you believe that?

MARISSA: I am just so hurt that she left us out like that!

JENNA: Wait a minute—did you ask Kate about this? I’m sure there’s a good reason why—

SAMANTHA: Do you think she’s mad at us?

MARISSA: I don’t know—do you think she thinks we’re mad at her for something?

JENNA: Girls, girls—don’t you think there might be a perfectly reasonable explanation for this? Kate didn’t say anything to me about a party either, and I live one street over from her!

MARISSA: Maybe she’s mad at you, too.

SAMANTHA: Oh no! I just remembered!

JENNA: (rolling her eyes) What?

SAMANTHA: I was supposed to go to Kate’s one day after school last week, but then I had to cancel because I had a dentist appointment. Do you think that’s what made her mad?

MARISSA: Oh no!

JENNA: (holding her head in her hands in frustration) What now?

MARISSA: Remember that science project we did last month? Well, I told Kate I would be her partner, but then Mrs. Felder ended up making me work with James instead. Do you think that hurt Kate’s feelings?

SAMANTHA: Oh wow, no wonder she didn’t invite us to her party! We’ve been terrible friends!

MARISSA: Poor Kate!

JENNA: I repeat: don’t you think you two should just ask Kate about this? You’re getting yourselves all worked up over what is probably nothing.

MARISSA: Jenna, if Kate is mad at us, she’s not going to tell us.

SAMANTHA: That’s true. Kate is way too nice to tell us to our faces if she was mad.

JENNA: Well, you two can continue to be ridiculous, or you can ask your friend what’s going on. Here she comes. (MARISSA and SAMANTHA smile nervously as KATE approaches.)

MARISSA and SAMANTHA: (nervously) Hi, Kate!

KATE: Hey! How was your weekend, girls?

(MARISSA and SAMANTHA exchange a knowing glance)

MARISSA: Ummm . . . pretty quiet. We certainly didn’t get invited to any parties or anything.

SAMANTHA: Yep. No parties. Not for us.

KATE: O—kay . . . (She looks from one girl to the other, becoming confused.)

JENNA: (looking at the other two girls and then shaking her head) So, Kate. I heard you had a party over the weekend. I bet it was fantastic. (MARISSA and SAMANTHA gasp.)

KATE: Party?

SAMANTHA: (blurting out in frustration) Yeah. I heard lots of people were invited.

MARISSA: But, some people weren’t invited at all.

KATE: (suddenly understanding) Oh, you must be talking about my brother’s birthday party. Yeah, he had it at Gamer’s Table and my mom and dad forced me to go. The whole baseball team was there. It was so boring.

MARISSA: It was your brother’s party?

KATE: Yeah Wherever he goes, we all go. My mom and dad are big on family!

JENNA: Your brother’s birthday party? That makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it, girls? (looks at MARISSA and SAMANTHA)

MARISSA: (ashamedly) It sure does. (SAMANTHA nods in agreement.)

KATE: (looking confused) Wait…am I missing something?

JENNA: Just your silly old friends forgetting that we’ve been friends since kindergarten, and should never listen to gossip.

(As the lights dim, MARISSA and SAMANTHA both start silently talking at once, laughing and shaking their heads to indicate their embarrassment. ALL the girls are laughing as the scene ends.)
